THE
PARENT COACH: Coaching Money Matters to Children by Dr. Steven Richfield
MANY
PARENTS REMEMBER being raised under
the philosophical umbrella that barred children from knowledge about
so-called “private matters.” Money was one topic that
was often deemed off limits until children were much older. Monetary
wisdom was dispatched with trite expressions such as “Money
doesn’t grow on trees,” and if pressed for information,
“Children should be seen and not heard,” might be pulled
out to end conversation. Ironically, keeping kids in the dark about
finances helped parents avoid uncomfortable discussions but denied
children the opportunity to build a “money judgment account.”
